Provost’s Colloquium Series Presents “In All Our Space and Time: Towards a Classroom that Honors Neurodiversity”

East Stroudsburg University's Provost's Colloquium Series, an intellectual experience that promotes dialogue among ESU faculty, staff, students, and community, opens the Fall 2024 semester with a presentation by Andrew Gavalis, Ph.D., professor of reading and Ahmed Yousof, Ph.D., associate professor, art + media + design and instructional design technology. The presentation, "In All Our Space and Time: Towards a Classroom that Honors Neurodiversity", will take place on Wednesday, September 11, at 12 p.m. in Stroud Hall 404 (SITE). The presentation will also be live streamed on the ESU Live Events webpage.

In this interactive presentation Dr. Gavalis and Dr. Yousof will explore the concept of fostering a truly inclusive learning environment for students with autism. The number of neuro-diverse students is on the rise. It is estimated that around 1 in every 36 individuals has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which is up from the previous number of 1 in every 44. Despite this increase students with ASD still face challenges, such as higher course repetition rates and a greater likelihood of dropping out without obtaining a degree. The presenters will discuss ways to engage students with ASD to promote learning for everyone in the class. Both Gavalis and Yousof have children with autism and will share real-life stories and case studies of college students with autism. They will illustrate that by focusing on improved communication strategies for both faculty and students and honoring the unique learning styles of those with ASD, we can create opportunities for all students to thrive and contribute to a sense of belonging, ensuring every learner feels valued and empowered to participate in the classroom community.
