Frijoles Canyon Stabilized; Several Closures Remain in Place

Los Alamos, N.M. - National Park Service staff have stabilized Frijoles Canyon following a flash flood that occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, September 5^th. Bandelier's Historic District was not damaged, and the Frey Trail has been reopened.

The Cottonwood Overflow parking lot has reopened, however, four hazard trees were identified in and around the parking areas. Several parking spaces have been blocked until further assessments can be made. Because of this, visitors should expect more limited parking than usual since the shuttle service has been suspended. It is recommended to arrive either before 9 am or after 3 pm to avoid possible parking congestion.

Several closures remain in place. Some trails, including the popular Alcove House Trail, have sustained heavy damage and will remain closed. In addition, Bandelier's backcountry - except for the high alpine areas and trails that do not enter the park's canyons - will stay closed due to safety concerns. There are no estimates yet as to when these closures will be lifted.
