Overcoming Challenges to Create a Modern Campus Hub

Arcas Building Solutions faced unique challenges throughout the project, particularly due to the site's structural and logistical constraints. Situated in a landlocked area with restricted access on three sides, the delivery of specialised materials required meticulous planning. Limited to rigid vehicles due to the narrow site entrance, the team coordinated logistics with precision to ensure the project stayed on track.

The extensive works included major demolition and remodelling of the two-storey administration and library building, expanding its gross floor area to enhance functionality. A defining feature of the renovation was the introduction of a lightwell that allows natural light to flood both the ground and first floors, creating a bright and welcoming environment for students and staff alike.

Balancing Heritage and Innovation

While creating a modern space, Arcas remained mindful of preserving the building's heritage. Historic features, including artwork that formed part of the building's identity, were carefully preserved and integrated into the redesign. This sensitive approach ensured the renovated space honoured its past while meeting the needs of the university's present-day community.

Additional upgrades included a new steel canopy and curtain walling across all elevations, designed to reduce solar gain and improve energy efficiency. These enhancements not only modernised the building's appearance but also contributed to its sustainability. Despite tight summer deadlines, the project was completed in time for the new academic year, providing students with a refreshed, inspiring space to begin their studies.

A Look at Current Works

Building on the success of Student Central, Arcas Building Solutions is currently undertaking another significant project for Northumbria University at their Teaching & Instrumentation Lab. This complex renovation involves demolition and asbestos removal, both of which have been successfully completed. Progress continues with the M&E first fix and specialist gas installations nearing completion, alongside the installation of partitions and ceilings.
