City-Parish to Honor Purple Heart Recipients in August 2024

Baton Rouge, LA - August 1, 2024- The City of Baton Rouge and Parish of East Baton Rouge are set to commemorate Purple Heart Day on August 7, 2024, in tribute to the brave Americans who have been wounded or killed in action while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome invites all citizens and City-Parish employees to wear purple on this significant day, August 7, demonstrating unity and support for these remarkable heroes.

Purple Heart Day pays homage to the courage and sacrifice of current and former service members who have endured battle injuries or lost their lives in the line of duty. The Purple Heart, the nation's oldest military award, was first established by General George Washington in 1782. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the valor and sacrifice of those who have worn or wear this distinguished medal.

Residents and City employees are encouraged to observe the day by wearing purple on August 7, a symbol of solidarity and recognition for the courageous men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart.

In addition, a special recognition ceremony will be held before the Metropolitan Council meeting on August 14, 2024, at 3 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 222 St. Louis Street, Baton Rouge. The event will offer an opportunity for the community to honor and reflect on the heroism of these service members. Residents and City-Parish employees are also encouraged to wear purple at this special ceremony.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome expressed her heartfelt sentiments, stating, "Purple Heart Day is a vital occasion to acknowledge our military personnel's selfless service and sacrifices. We show our deepest respect and gratitude for their bravery by wearing purple and participating in the ceremony. It is a day for all of us to honor, reflect, and remember those who have given so much for our country."
