Utility works to keep up with reports of water leaks

Sept. 16, 2024 - Hampton residents have noticed an apparent surge in minor water leaks, which has been complicated by a staffing shortage at Newport News Waterworks, the utility that provides service to most of the Peninsula region.

Newport News Waterworks is actively working to resolve the issue. The utility is currently dealing with a backlog involving dozens of active leaks across the Peninsula. Some repairs, even of minor leaks, could take up to six months to complete due to staffing shortages. Many of the water pipes serving Hampton are decades old, and as a result, leaks are becoming more frequent. While Newport News Waterworks is investing in infrastructure upgrades, the sheer volume of leaks is straining its current resources.

Newport News Waterworks continues to prioritize emergency repairs, which are generally executed on the day they are reported.
To address the issue, the utility is actively recruiting equipment operators to expand their repair crews. Competitive salaries and benefits are being offered to attract qualified individuals.
Residents are urged to report any new leaks or water-related issues to 311 or Newport News Waterworks directly at 757-926-1000. By doing this, residents can help prioritize repairs and contribute to the solution.
