Planning a More Resilient Future for Spokane

The City of Spokane is embarking on a transformative journey to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change. On April 22, 2024, City Council adopted Resolution 2024-0038 to initiate Climate Planning as part of the periodic update to the Comprehensive Plan, due in 2026.
Our Comprehensive Plan serves as the roadmap for Spokane's future growth and development. The Washington Legislature adopted HB 1181 in 2023, which added a requirement for cities to include a climate element into their comprehensive planning efforts. By integrating climate considerations into this plan, we're not only addressing immediate challenges but also laying the foundation for a more resilient city in the years to come.
Look out for upcoming community workshops and events throughout 2024 and 2025 to speak with the Climate Planning Team, share information, and provide your thoughts on climate planning. What is Climate Planning?
Climate planning focuses on addressing shifting climate impacts to support sustainability and resiliency. It includes developing strategies and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to changing environmental conditions, and enhance the overall resiliency within the city. From fire mitigation, urban tree canopies, and stormwater down to home repairs and bike lanes, climate-focused policies can be integrated into most aspects of city planning.
Climate change affects everyone, regardless of age, background, or socioeconomic status. By proactively addressing climate risks and vulnerabilities, we can protect our community, preserve our environment, and promote equity and justice.
Early Feedback
The Climate Planning Team was at the Fall Leaf Festival and Compost Fair to begin early conversations about making Spokane resilient and sustainable throughout the next twenty years. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and shared their input!
We asked community members to vote on the climate impacts they were most concerned about. And the results are in!
- 49% voted for wildfires and smoke
- 24% voted for water quality and snowpack
- 21% voted for increased heat and drought
- 6% voted for heavy rains and flooding
