Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown Scholarship established

Lamar University has announced the establishment of the Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Scholarship, thanks to the generosity of donor Stephen "Doc" Watson. This scholarship, created in honor of the legendary Grammy Award-winning musician from southeast Texas, will support students pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Performance with a focus on instrumental music.

The scholarship is specifically designed for sophomore students who demonstrate financial need and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recipients will be selected by a university scholarship committee based on these criteria.

The scholarship is initially funded on an annual basis, with plans to build toward an endowed scholarship to ensure long-term support for Lamar University's music students.

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, known for his mastery of a wide range of musical styles including jazz, swing, blues, country, and Cajun, left a lasting legacy in the world of American music. His memory will now continue to inspire future generations of musicians through this scholarship, ensuring that his influence endures at Lamar University for years to come.
