City hosting after-school program at Wright Cuney

Wright Cuney Recreation Center will host a free after-school program on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. for school-aged children 5 to 15 years old.

The program is an extension of the successful summer youth program at Wright Cuney, which provided daily activities and a safe place for children. The after-school program will offer a range of activities such as tutoring, dance, basketball, arts and crafts, and pickleball. The youth program will operate on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The program is free to all residents.

"We're proud to be one of the few cities providing an after-school program at no cost to residents," City Manager Brian Maxwell said. "This gives all Galveston children a safe environment to go afterschool to learn, play and grow."

To sign up, the child's caregiver should register in person at Wright Cuney Recreation Center, 718 41st St. If a child is already signed up for the summer youth program, they do not need to re-register for the after-school program. Guardians may also call 409-797-3715 for more information. The recreation center is open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
