Onward: An interview with Kelli Sem

By Veronica Corey
Communications and Marketing Specialist

MINOT, N.D. - Kelli Sem '19/'22, a proud alumna of Minot State University, holds a Master of Science in Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. The Minot native has been recognized for her exceptional contributions, earning the Outstanding Student of the Year Award in 2022 and the High-five Award in May 2024.

With a passion for advocacy and student support, Sem has dedicated the past five years to working at MSU, initially as an academic coach in the Power Center and now as the Access Services Coordinator. She strives to ensure that students receive the respect and support they need to succeed.

Minot State's University Communications interviewed Sem to learn more about her experiences at MSU and how she helps students succeed.

What motivated you to join advocacy groups at Minot State, and how did your background play a role in this decision?
KS: Growing up with a disability, my parents always so effortlessly adapted my world to me. When I came to college at Minot State, it was really the first time I had to advocate for myself. I quickly became involved in several advocacy groups locally.

What activities and opportunities did you participate in at MSU?
KS: As a student, I was active in the Power Center and even went on a trip to Washington, D.C. with the Power Center.

How long have you worked for MSU, and what areas have you worked in?
KS: On July 8, I celebrated five years. I worked in the Power Center as an Academic Coach before receiving the Access Services Coordinator position.

Why did you choose to attend Minot State, and what made you return to work at the same school?
KS: I liked that you weren't just a name on a list that got pushed to a TA. The actual professors knew my name and cared about how I did in the class. Now I work hard every day to ensure students are respected and supported.

Can you tell us about your previous experience in Access Services and what motivated you to pursue a career in this field?
KS: As a student, I used Access Services myself. I also had a job working with students with disabilities while I was in college. When I was a Power academic, I loved watching students grow in their advocacy skills.

What do you enjoy the most about your career?
KS: I love assisting students and that every day is different.

Have there been any changes that you have helped implement since taking the role?
KS: When I first started my role, we found peer notetakers. This was a time-intensive process because peer notetakers had to apply and then be matched up. Not every class had students willing to be notetakers. I knew there had to be a better way. Doing some research, I discovered we had note-taking technology that would transcribe already available through Microsoft Teams. This puts the power in the students' hands.

What are your favorite memories of Minot State from when you attended as a student and now as an employee?
KS: My favorite memories all include people! From Dr. Crackel's daily chemistry jokes to Professor Frantsvog's interesting law examples, my faculty made learning fun. I also made so many great friendships with people near and far.

During your time as a student, which aspects of Access Services were most helpful to you?
KS: I used extended time on exams and quizzes and someone to scribe my work. (Dictation has improved significantly in the last few years.)

What do you like to do outside of work: family, hobbies, or other areas of interest?
KS: I love to craft with my Cricut, camp, and I love technology.

What else are we missing when telling your story?
KS: I encourage any student with a disability who needs classroom accommodations to come talk with me.
