Children Share Their Thoughts About Future Careers and Education with Treasurer Smith

DES MOINES, Iowa - When it comes to the future, little Iowans have an idea about the cost of education and their future goals. At the College Savings Iowa State Fair booth, State Treasurer Roby Smith surveyed children to gather their thoughts and discovered they want to be athletes, veterinarians and teachers when they get older. "I also discovered 84% believe higher education will be needed to achieve their career goals," said Smith. "College Savings Iowa can help families make those goals a reality with just $25 and 10 minutes."

"Fifty-two percent of the kids surveyed think college will cost about $100,000," continued Smith. "As a parent, I realize how fast time flies. Saving for their education early can give your loved ones the financial support they need to pursue their dreams."

College Savings Iowa, the State's direct-sold 529 plan, provides families a tax-advantaged way to save money for future education expenses. Anyone - parents, grandparents, friends and relatives - can invest in a College Savings Iowa account on behalf of a loved one. Savers can deduct up to $5,500 in contributions per account from their Iowa income taxes. Account funds can be withdrawn tax-free to pay for tuition; room and board; books; supplies; and other qualified education expenses for K-12 education; trade schools; apprentice programs; colleges; and universities in the U.S. and abroad.
