Special, Fun and Educational Opportunities: Commerce Invites Ohioans of All Ages to the 2024 State Fair

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Get ready to visit the Commerce House at the Ohio State Fair! Opening inside the Bricker building on Wednesday, July 24, Commerce House will be available to fairgoers until the fair concludes on Sunday, Aug. 4. During this 12-day span, the Ohio Department of Commerce team is ready to assist attendees in various areas and share some possibly unexpected opportunities.

"As Ohio's chief regulator, the Ohio Department of Commerce is dedicated to having a positive impact on our state and all who call it home," said Commerce Director Sherry Maxfield. "The fair is a great opportunity for Team Commerce to meet and engage with individuals from all corners of Ohio and help highlight the various roles Commerce plays in protecting what matters most in their lives, whether it's their health, safety, or finances."

The main attractions at this year's Commerce House highlight the diverse industries regulated by Commerce in Ohio. Fairgoers can inspect second-hand stuffed toys and bedding by using a black light, which simulates a thrift store inspection experience. In addition, a fire extinguisher simulator will be available on Opening Day and Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, allowing visitors to practice extinguishing simulated fires with a realistic extinguisher replica connected to a tablet. For those interested in serving their community, there also will be interactive activities and information on ways that Ohioans can become volunteer firefighters.

Returning to the Commerce House this year are the popular Ohio Bottle Lottery and Unclaimed Funds kiosks. Visitors over 21 can enter to win the opportunity to purchase a bottle of Rock Hill Farms bourbon and check for unclaimed funds with in-person assistance. Last year, fairgoers discovered more than $320,000 in unclaimed funds.

While adults explore the kiosks, younger fairgoers can enjoy coloring activities and get their own firefighter hat. Families can also sign up for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library of Ohio, which sends a child one free book each month until his or her 5th birthday. In addition, fairgoers can pick up a Homebuyers Checklist, which provides valuable information to help Ohioans navigate today's changing and challenging housing market.

"Commerce is the Heart of Prosperity, and consumers should definitely plan to visit the Commerce House while at the fair," Maxfield added. "This is our largest outreach event, providing an incredible opportunity to educate Ohioans on important aspects of their lives. We look forward to welcoming many visitors this year."
