Mexico-Guatemala Bilateral Meeting

The Foreign Ministers of Guatemala and Mexico held a joint meeting with the ministers and secretaries of Interior, Defense, and Public Security, along with immigration authorities, disaster reduction coordinators and other officials from both countries. During the meeting, they agreed to joint humanitarian and consular assistance actions for the Mexican citizens in Cuilco, Huehuetenango.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment to collaborate on key issues affecting our border communities, as expressed by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo at their May 17 meeting in Tapachula.

The Governments of Guatemala and Mexico reaffirm their friendly relations, cooperation and coordination with multilateral bodies. They guarantee full compliance with international law to provide protection for those in need and to move towards more orderly, safe, regular, and humane migration management. Mexico thanked Guatemala for its solidarity at various levels of government and announced that it will send a mobile kitchen from Mexico's Ministry of Defense to Cuilco to assist the Mexicans temporarily in Huehuetenango.

On security, both countries agreed to conduct coordinated land and air operations on both sides of the border, maintain ongoing communication and convene a high-level meeting of the Mexico-Guatemala High-Level Security Group (Ganseg) in late August. Additionally, Mexico's Secretary of the Interior announced that, together with the Ministries of Wellbeing, Health, and Security and the Chiapas State Government, they will implement a comprehensive plan for Amatenango de la Frontera. This plan will include social programs, health care, and a 'wellbeing fair' to provide social assistance for affected communities, increasing the law enforcement presence provided by Mexico's Ministry of Defense.

The Government of Mexico thanked the people and Government of Guatemala for the support, assistance and solidarity shown to the Mexicans in Guatemala.
