A Global Push for Earthquake Safety

Many things in life may catch us off guard - earthquakes don't have to. While their infrequency can cause a false sense of security, it's important to remember one can strike at any time, potentially causing severe infrastructure damage, injuries and loss of life.

To prepare for "the Big One," Southern California Edison customers are encouraged to participate in this year's Great ShakeOut. On Oct. 17, millions of people will practice earthquake drills at work, school or home. Join in as communities drop, cover and hold on, creating muscle memory to reduce panic and increase the chances of staying safe during a real event.

During an earthquake, you may only have seconds to protect yourself before strong shaking knocks you down or something falls on you. Preparation can help you react quickly.

Earthquake Warning California is the country's first publicly available, statewide warning system that provides residents with crucial seconds to take cover before they feel shaking. It uses ground motion sensors from across the state to detect earthquakes before they can be felt and can notify us to drop, cover and hold on.

It's also important that emergency preparedness kits are packed and ready, with supplies of water, food and other essentials for your family.

Here are some of the ways to receive earthquake warnings:

  • MyShake App: An app at no cost from Google Play and the Apple App Store. App users can set up a "HomeBase" location and receive earthquake warnings without having location services turned on.
  • Android Earthquake Alerts: Included in new or updated Android devices, the system uses the same technology as the MyShake App.
  • Wireless Emergency Alerts: Text-like messages from the government during emergencies. This includes presidential, imminent threats (fire, earthquake, floods, etc.) and AMBER alerts.
