The University of Texas Medical Branch is among 50 institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of State as a 2024 Fulbright Hispanic-Serving Institution Leader.

Announced during the recent Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities annual conference, the honor acknowledges the institutions' support for Fulbright exchange participants and promotion of Fulbright program opportunities, which ultimately aim to increase mutual understanding and support friendly and peaceful relations between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.

"UTMB is honored to receive this recognition, and we're thrilled to create outstanding opportunities for students, faculty and administrators worldwide," said Dr. Charles Mouton, Executive Vice President, Provost, and Dean of the John Sealy School of Medicine. "As a historic academic medical center, we take great pride in empowering the next generation of health sciences and medical professionals, regardless of background."

According to the Fulbright Program, Hispanic-Serving Institutions like UTMB serve two-thirds of all Hispanic students in U.S. higher education.

"We are honored to be recognized in this way and are committed to helping all populations of students access world-class educational programs and experiences," said UTMB President and CEO of the Health system Dr. Jochen Reiser.

Founded in 1946, the Fulbright Program is the world's largest and most diverse international educational program that encourages participants to engage in their local communities while exemplifying the qualities of service, leadership and excellence.
