Placer County marks Adopt a Shelter Dog Month with special event hosted by Kiley, Landon

Published Sept. 19, 2024

With dogs continuing to come into shelters at alarming numbers, Placer County Animal Services is partnering with local elected officials to raise awareness and celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month with special adoption events and promotions.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, residents and visitors can adopt any pet from the Auburn shelter for free. Congressman Kevin Kiley and Placer County Supervisor Shanti Landon will be present to host the event, which will also feature shelter tours, local pet-related vendors, free pet supplies, food and family-friendly activities.

WHAT: Special free adoption event for National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
WHO: Congressman Kevin Kiley, Placer County Supervisor Shanti Landon and the staff and animals at Placer County Animal Services (PCAS)
WHERE: 11232 B Ave., Auburn, CA
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event will kick off National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month in October, and PCAS will continue with $5 discounted pet adoptions for the entire month.

"Our local shelters are doing incredible work, but they're facing a real challenge and it's more important than ever for our community to step up and help," said Congressman Kiley.

Dog intakes at PCAS's Auburn shelter are up 34% compared to 2022 this year, and more than 8% compared to last year.

"Anytime we can help dogs be adopted into new homes faster will help both the dog and the shelter with much needed space for new arrivals," said Katie Ingram, PCAS program manager.

Supervisor Shanti Landon added, "Adopting a pet is a wonderful way to give an animal a chance at a loving home. And it's not just about adoption-volunteering and fostering are crucial too."
