Recap: October 8, 2024 Public Meeting for East Durham Waterline Replacement Project

Water Management held a public meeting on October 8, 2024 for the East Durham Waterline Replacement Project. The meeting was a hybrid meeting held in-person at The W.G. Pearson Center and online as a Zoom meeting.

Background

The departments of Water Management and Public Works are improving water, sewer, and stormwater infrastructure between Fayetteville Street and Alston Avenue. Additional improvements will stretch from Linwood Avenue to Hopkins Street. The project area does not include areas that were previously rehabilitated or replaced.

Public Meeting

The meeting featured project representatives from the City of Durham, Hazen, Kimley-Horn, and CJS Conveyance presenting the project's scope, impacts, and the schedule for the project phases.

The project's purpose is to:

  • Replace aging infrastructure
  • Improve service reliability
  • Address capacity of utilities to meet current and future demands

Project construction phasing - Water Management projects:

  • Phase 1A - Spring 2025
  • Phase 1B - Summer 2025
  • Phase 2 - Summer 2027
  • Phase 3 - Winter 2027

Project construction phasing - Other agencies:

  • Alston Avenue - NCDOT - Ongoing
  • Fayetteville Street - Durham Department of Transportation - Construction 2026

Completed phases:

  • Newman Street
  • Stokes Street
