ACL Awards Disaster Recovery Assistance Grant

October 10, 2024

ACL has awarded a one-year (September 30, 2024-September 29, 2025) grant of $116,296 to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services Aging and Disability Services Division, which operates as the state unit on aging (SUA), for assisting with the recovery efforts from major disasters declared by the president of the United States. The grant is provided under the Older Americans Act. The Act authorizes limited funding to SUAs and approved tribal organizations to help offset the costs of meeting critical needs of older adults in disaster recovery efforts. To receive the funding, eligible organizations must submit an application to ACL through grants.gov.

Severe weather events - including tornadoes, heavy rainfall, and flooding - affected 26 of the 99 counties in the state from May 14, 2024, to June 24, 2024. The Iowa SUA will use the funding awarded from ACL to assist an area agency on aging that covers 10 counties in a rural area with recovery efforts. The funding will go toward home and community-based services, including emergency shelf-stable meals, and material aid to support older adults in maintaining their health, safety, and independence, such as replacement of food supply, personal care items, eyeglasses, smoke detectors, durable medical equipment, and supplies and security devices that support safety.
