The power plants you don't expect: a tightrope above Hell

Increasingly - all over Italy, and for a wide variety of reasons - our power plants are at the center of attention and participation on the part of communities, associations, companies and institutions. Not hidden worlds, but real places that are open and accessible to civil society, that are part of their communities and that work and produce for them.

Geothermal Hills Festival
We could have amazed you with special effects and highly energetic music: instead, it's all real!

Tuscany's four geothermal municipalities(Larderello, Pomarance, Monterotondo Marittimo and Castelnuovo Val di Cecina) are the stars of the "Festival delle Colline Geotermiche," (the Geothermal Hills Festival), which is sponsored and hosted by Enel Green Power. It is currently in full swing, with a packed schedule of events and performances, and will run until the eve of Ferragosto, Italy's mid-August bank holiday.

It features poetry, theater, various workshops and even spectacular events. On Saturday July 8, for example, tightrope walker Andrea Loreni performed "Sopra l'Inferno" ("Above Hell") in which he was suspended on a rope that was more than 15 meters high. He proceeded to walk across the entire "sky" of the Larderello Geothermal Arena, accompanied by the voices of soprano Greta Buonamici and the local "Valle Chorale" choir.

It was a breathtaking spectacle, in a stunning location that goes beyond industrial archaeology. The Arena is indeed unique: it's a 300-seat venue for open-air shows and events that was built by EGP with the collaboration of the Municipality of Pomarance. It was created by adapting and restoring the base of an old cooling tower.

The success of this ingenious "scenic" reuse project is rooted in an effective mix of industrial archeology (the surrounding scenery is both futuristic and post-industrial geothermal) and excellent acoustics, thanks to its perfect circular shape. Its success is evident in the richness and variety of events it has been hosting for several years: theater (a lot), fashion shows and DJ sets have all felt at home in this original and quality location.

"Above Hell" is the cable stretched over the abyss, it's the imposing circular basin of the Geothermal Arena, and the open background of the sky at dusk. Up there, a solitary man walks slowly, bravely balancing over the void, expressing, like the song that accompanies him, the fine balance between mankind and infinity. The crossing is certainly an act of beauty, but above all, it's a path where no one thought one could be possible, and this becomes a universal metaphor for human adventure. Thus, the quiet march across the void, and its destination, are mirrored in a journey of consciousness: the onset and acceptance of fear, the calming of thought and concentration on the present moment, the risk of falling and contact with the absolute.

This site-specificevent, which was developed multidimensionally in the magical setting of La Valle del Diavolo (the Devil's Valley) was created by Boris Vecchio and Marco Pasquinucci.

This "sold out" event also featured speeches by Tuscany's Regional President Eugenio Giani, Pomarance's Mayor Ilaria Bacci, and Enel Green Power Italy's Geothermal manager Luca Rossini, in the Arena's "rounded frame."

The Biancane Park, a natural gem in the heart of the GeoParco delle Colline Metallifere Grossetane (the Grosseto Metalliferous Hills GeoPark, a UNESCO World Heritage site), then provided the setting for a Queen tribute concert. It featured the band Great Queen Rats, whose engaging blend of professionalism and passion has wowed audiences in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, the United States and Asia.

The concert was made possible by the collaboration between the Monterotondo Marittimo Municipal Administration and Enel Green Power.

In Tuscany, and particularly in Larderello, Enel Green Power operates the oldest and, at the same time, most innovative geothermal complex in the world. It has 34 geothermal power plants, 37 generating units, distributed among the provinces of Pisa, Siena and Grosseto.Nearly 6 billion KWh (6 Terawatt-hours) are produced annually. Not only does this amount meet more than 33% of the region's electricity needs, but it also provides heating for 13 thousand users, including nearly 30 hectares of greenhouses and companies in the agribusiness, floriculture and handicraft sectors. Geothermal energy is also of great value from a cultural, historical and tourism point of view with 60,000 visits a year. Visitors can enjoy unseen itineraries in the warm heart of a lesser-known but equally enchanting Tuscany which is immersed in natural phenomena such as geysers and fumaroles that are integrated with the area's power plants, geothermal sites, trekking routes and museum centers.

The Geothermal Hills Festival will run until August 13: we, on the other hand, look forward to surprising you again with other spectacular initiatives at our power plants!
