Novavax Ordering:

Although authorized, the updated Novavax 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine is currently not available for ordering. When the vaccine becomes available for provider ordering, this information will be communicated via email to providers and a VOMS' message of the day will be posted. The initial expiration date on the current supply is October 31, 2024. Novavax is pursuing a shelf-life extension for this and future lots of vaccine and anticipates receiving monthly shelf-life updates throughout the COVID vaccination season. Novavax will support an Expiration Look-up Tool (accessible via a QR code located on the outer vaccine carton) so that providers can look for the most up-to-date information about product expiry before vaccine is administered.

Planning considerations for ordering 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccines.

  • Providers are advised to consider their storage space when placing vaccine orders.
  • Off-cycle COVID-19 vaccine orders can be submitted through the ImpactSIIS Vaccine Ordering Management System (VOMS) as demand for the products is determined and providers need to replenish their inventory.
  • VOMS is available for providers to place orders 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • If providers have private supply of COVID-19 vaccines before their VFC or 317-funded COVID-19 vaccines are delivered, they are able to borrow private stock doses for eligible patients and repay the doses once their VFC or 317 stock arrives. All borrowed doses must be documented on the Borrowing Form.

The Ohio VFC Program has scheduled a VFC Education Session for Thursday, September 26, 2024. The upcoming VFC provider education session will include information about the 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine products. Details on how to access these sessions will be sent out via email.

The Ohio Department of Health will continue to share updates and resources about COVID-19 vaccines as available.

1. VFC Vaccine Eligibility

Children through age 18 years who meet at least one of the following four criteria are considered federally vaccine-eligible and therefore eligible for vaccine through the VFC program:

  • Medicaid eligible: A child who has health insurance covered by a state Medicaid program.
  • Uninsured: A child who has no health insurance coverage.
  • American Indian or Alaska Native: As defined by the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (25 U.S.C. 1603).
  • Underinsured: Underinsured children are eligible to receive VFC vaccine only through a federally qualified health center (FQHC), rural health clinic (RHC), or a public health department that receives deputized authority from a FQHC or RHC.

For the purposes of VFC, underinsured includes:

  • Children who have commercial (private) health insurance, but the coverage does not include vaccines.
  • Children whose insurance covers only selected vaccines (VFC eligible for non-covered vaccines only).
  • Children whose insurance caps vaccine coverage at a certain amount (once that coverage amount is reached, these children are categorized as underinsured).

2. Adult COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility

Adults over 19 years must meet at least one of the following criteria to be eligible for vaccine through the ODH Adult Immunization Program: Federally funded COVID-19 vaccine for adults is only available to local health departments and federally qualified health centers enrolled in the ODH VFC program.

  • Uninsured: A person who does not have health insurance. (Medicaid and Medicare are considered insurance.)
  • Underinsured:
    • A person who has health insurance, but the insurance does not include any vaccines.
    • A person whose insurance covers only selected vaccines.
    • A person whose insurance does not provide first-dollar coverage for vaccines.
