SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Shepherd University's Center for Appalachian Studies and Communities presented a $5,000 travel award to Shepherd English major Julie Shehan.

This award recognizes her efforts as a student editor of the Anthology of Appalachian Writers: Ann Pancake Volume XVI released earlier this year and will support her academic journey with the Appalachian Studies Celtic Roots program to Switzerland and Italy in June 2025.

Shehan is an undergraduate student majoring in English with a minor in Appalachian studies and serves as the 2024 host of the Voices from Appalachia radio show. She will complete her bachelor of arts degree in 2025 and plans to pursue a Master of Arts in Appalachian Studies through the University's 4+1 graduate program, which allows approved students to enroll in graduate-level credits as undergraduate students. Shehan is an accomplished writer, artist, and mother of twin daughters.

With this award, Shehan will participate in travel to Geneva, Montreux, Interlaken/Thun, Lauterbrunnen, Pisa, Florence, and Rome. The Celtic Roots tour is available to all Shepherd University students and community members and is limited to 20 participants.
