Mayor’s Youth Council Recognizes Breast Cancer Warrior

On Monday, October 21, 2024, the Douglas Mayor's Youth Council (DMYC) conducted its monthly meeting for October. Junior Mayor Destiny Henderson led the meeting and recognized Diana Lindsey as the outstanding Community Spotlight for October. Special guest speakers were Joey and Devis Burnam, owners of the Tio's Table Restaurant.

The Youth Council proudly highlighted Diana Lindsey-Wolfe as a community warrior for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unable to attend the meeting due to chemotherapy, her resilience shines through as she continues to work from home for DouglasNow.com. At age 66, Diana is a beloved member of the Douglas community and a devoted mother of three and grandmother of six. She draws strength from her family which is her greatest joy.

The guest speakers for October were Joey ("Tio") and Devis Burnam from the Tio's Table Restaurant. Known for their vibrant personalities and culinary expertise, they spoke to the Youth Council about their mission to unite people through bold flavors and authentic dishes. Tio's Table is dedicated to serving fusion cuisine that feels like home, embodying their motto: "Real Food, Real People, Real Good."

During the meeting, updates were shared about various mentoring programs and community events. Ambitious Young Men (AYM), FLY Girlz, and FLY Boyz will host a Fall Festival on October 27, 2024, from 2 PM to 7 PM at the Farmer's Market, located at 625 S. Gaskin Avenue. Wynetta Bolder, City Clerk, announced that the Girls Exploring Movements of Success (GEMS) will organize a "Soup and Blankets" event on November 23, 2024. Dinitra Williams, DMYC & Teen Court Coordinator, provided insights on upcoming initiatives, including updates from the Keep Douglas Beautiful Committee and the rescheduling of the Georgia Reads literacy events at local elementary schools. Jr. Mayor Pro Tem Dominic Mimbang briefly discussed the DMYC Heart2Help Community Care Packages Proposal. Finally, the DMYC concluded its October meeting with a quote from Aristotle Onassis, emphasizing the value of community support and the determination to overcome obstacles.
