The Global Technology for Social Justice (GloTech) Lab at UMass Amherst will host Bilge Yesil, professor of media culture at the College of Staten Island, for a conversation on Turkish and global politics and how they relate to trends in U.S. politics and the 2024 elections on Friday, Oct. 11 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Communication Hub of the Integrative Learning Center. The event is free and open to the public.<_o3a_p>
Yesil, who is also an affiliate faculty member in Middle Eastern studies at the City University of New York Graduate Center, will explore topics including religious victimhood, essentialization of East-West binaries and identitarian narratives, which are covered in her new book, "Talking Back to the West: How Turkey Uses Counter-Hegemony to Reshape the Global Communication Order" (University of Illinois Press, June 2024).<_o3a_p>
Yesil's research focuses on global media and communication, authoritarianism, surveillance, media ownership and communication policy. She is the author of "Video Surveillance: Power and Privacy in Everyday Life" (2009), "Media in New Turkey: The Origins of an Authoritarian Neoliberal State" (2016) and "Talking Back to the West: How Turkey Uses Counter-Hegemony to Reshape the Global Communication Order" (2024), and served as co-editor of "The Handbook of Media and Culture in the Middle East" (2023).<_o3a_p>
GloTech, which launched last March, is a hub for critical technology and global studies aiming to apply a globally minded and community-driven approach to critical tech studies.<_o3a_p>
