Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Maggie Erb Recognized With Prestigious 2024 DAISY Nurse Leader of the Year Award

Maggie Erb, MSN, RN, a Medical Oncology Clinical Manager at Fox Chase Cancer Center, was recently honored with the Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders' (PONL) 2024 DAISY Nurse Leader of the Year Award.

PHILADELPHIA (November 8, 2024) - Maggie Erb, MSN, RN, a Medical Oncology Clinical Manager at Fox Chase Cancer Center, was recently honored with the Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders' (PONL) 2024 DAISY Nurse Leader of the Year Award.

"I am thrilled to have been selected as the recipient of this prestigious award," said Erb. "To be honored for work that directly impacts both patients and staff in a positive way is always appreciated. I am eager to continue this fulfilling work and am grateful for this truly special recognition."

The DAISY Nurse Leader of the Year Award was created to recognize those who create a compassionate environment through skillful care but who are not typically involved in direct patient care. The award recognizes nurse managers, directors, assistant managers, charge nurses, chief nursing officers, informatics nurses, and patient flow nurses throughout Pennsylvania.

"Maggie's leadership stretches beyond the corridors of her unit. She is a nursing resource for colleagues caring for medical oncology inpatients and often responds to questions regarding goals of care, multidisciplinary communication, length of stay, as well as inpatient chemotherapy regimens across the cancer center," Susan Rux, PhD, DNP, RN, CENP, FACHE, NEA-BC, Associate Vice President, Professional Nursing Practice and Research at Temple Health, noted in Erb's nomination letter.

Award winners are typically nominated by staff or coworkers who can attest to their ability to provide quality, compassionate care. Blind nominations are then reviewed against criteria that include advocating for their teams, creating compassionate care environments, and being accessible and responsive to team needs, among other criteria.

"Within the past year, Maggie completed the Oncology Nursing Society Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Administration Program, thus role modeling to the novice nurses as well as other nurses throughout the inpatient setting that this education, while extremely valuable to the care they provide to patients each day, is also attainable," Rux noted.

"Maggie identified gaps in communication related to inpatient chemotherapy admissions and created and shared a tracking document for scheduled chemotherapy admissions with hospitalists, patient flow, and nursing supervisors. This strategy ensured that admission orders were placed, beds reserved, and appropriate staffing attained," she added.

In addition to her role as Medical Oncology Clinical Manager, Erb serves as Chair of the Nursing Performance Improvement Council and works tirelessly on process improvement and zero harm initiatives, patient satisfaction, and staff engagement. She has co-authored abstracts and presented at multiple national conferences.

Erb was celebrated at the PONL annual conference on September 27. In addition to receiving the esteemed Healer's Touch sculpture, she was granted a one-year paid membership to PONL, providing valuable resources and networking opportunities.
