Arson Investigation – Arrest: C24-231207

On October 3, 2024, at approximately midnight, patrolling West District General Patrol officers were flagged down by a concerned citizen in the 600 block of Sheppard Street regarding an adult male suspect in the area believed to be responsible for multiple deliberately set fires to property.

Officers located the suspect in the rear lane of a business and placed him under arrest without incident. Officers also seized a lighter from his person.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the following:

  • August 20: At approximately 2:30 p.m., the suspect attended to the rear of a retail business in the 2000 block of McPhillips Street and lit a fire in a large industrial garbage bin, causing an estimated $500 damage.
  • September 21: At approximately 2:30 a.m., the suspect attended to the rear of a retail business in the 2000 block of McPhillips Street and lit a trailer on fire, causing approximately $28,000 in damages to the business and a neighbouring residential detached garage.
  • September 30: At approximately 11:30 p.m., the suspect attended to the rear of a grocery store in the 600 block of Sheppard Avenue and lit a pile of scrap wood on fire, causing approximately $1,000 in damage.

Investigators identified an adult male believed to be involved in all three incidents. No injuries were reported as a result of these incidents.

Tyler Eugene Nyman, 43, of Winnipeg, is charged with the following offences:

  • Arson Causing Damage to Property x 4
  • Possession of Incendiary Device x 4
  • Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order x 8

He was detained in custody.
