Reminders on campaign signs as election approaches

As the November 5 election approaches, residents and property owners are reminded to follow campaign sign rules and remember that temporary signs may not be posted for more than 60 days.

The Del Mar Municipal Code prohibits posting signs that encroach onto streets, sidewalks, bike lanes, walking paths, traffic circles or center medians. Signs must not block motorists' or pedestrians' sightlines or create other safety hazards.

Beaches, bluffs and wetlands are off-limits for signs.

So are City-owned properties, such as parks. Signs may not be affixed to utility poles, streetlights, trees or traffic or parking signposts.

In residential zones, the maximum area of a temporary sign, as measured on one side, may not exceed 5 ½ square feet.

For some campaign signs, the municipal code requires advertising disclosures.
