The AI Office has received expressions of interest from almost 1000 organisations and individuals worldwide to participate in the drawing-up of the first General-Purpose AI Code of Practice. The kick-off plenary will be held online on Monday, 30 September‎ and all applicants have been informed about the upcoming meeting.

With the Kick-off Plenary, the drafting process for the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice will formally start.

The AI Office is currently verifying the eligibility of applicants on the basis of the submitted and publicly available information. Participation will be confirmed to relevant stakeholders in due time, and the outcome of this eligibility check will be communicated to all applicants.

Background

The Code of Practice will detail the AI Act rules for providers of general-purpose AI models and general-purpose AI models with systemic risks. The drafting process will be informed by a multi-stakeholder consultation providing an opportunity for all stakeholders to express their views on the topics covered by the first Code of Practice, with submissions due by 18 September.

The AI Office will appoint chairs and, as appropriate, vice-chairs for each of the four working groups of the plenary from the interested independent experts, responsible for synthesising submissions from the consultation and plenary participants. Based on the submissions from the consultation, chairs and vice-chairs will develop a first draft of the Code of Practice and share it with the respective working group in the second plenary. In total, there will be four drafting rounds. After 9 months, the final version of the first Code of Practice will be presented in a closing plenary, expected to take place in April, and published. This iterative process will lead to a final Code which should build on the different submissions while ensuring a convincing implementation of the legal framework. After publication of the Code, the AI Office and the AI Board will assess its adequacy and publish this assessment.

The AI Office is committed to ensuring an inclusive and transparent process.
