Use of geospatial information in population estimates

Population and housing censuses (PHC) are key sources of data, providing detailed information by geographic areas and population groups, essential for development planning and monitoring.

From 16 to 18 September, ESCWA, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the League of Arab States (LAS), and the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), and in partnership with WorldPoP of the University of Southampton, conducted a regional workshop on geospatial population estimation.

Participants included senior leaders of national statistical offices and other key decision makers from selected countries with gaps in population data. They received an in-depth orientation on geospatial population estimation techniques and their potential contribution to population data systems, with the aim of securing their commitment to implement these techniques in the target countries.
