Washington, DC-The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is proud to join the nation in celebrating National Arts and Humanities Month this October, recognizing the essential role that museums and libraries play in enriching the cultural fabric of our communities. From hosting art exhibitions and performance events to preserving historical documents and fostering digital innovation, these institutions are critical in shaping our understanding of culture, history, and the arts.

In recognition of the occasion, President Biden issued a Presidential Proclamation on National Arts and Humanities Month, 2024, which states:

"The arts and humanities bring people together and show us that we have more in common than we have differences - helping us see each other, understand one another, and unite in common cause. Our artists and scholars embody the very spirit of America: the drive to create and connect, the pursuit of excellence, and the boldness to be truthtellers and change seekers. During National Arts and Humanities Month, we celebrate the artists and scholars who lift us up, speak to our souls, and shape who we are as a Nation."

As the leading federal support for museums and libraries, IMLS provides funding that enables these cultural institutions to deliver innovative programming, preserve important cultural artifacts, and serve as vital community hubs.

"Museums and libraries are the cornerstones of the nation's arts and humanities ecosystem," said IMLS Acting Director Cyndee Landrum. "Museums and libraries nurture the creativity, contemplation and curiosity that catalyzes arts and humanities, while serving as spaces for all people, of all backgrounds, to engage, connect, and foster deeper community connections."

Through social media, IMLS will show the depth and diversity of our nation's cultural landscape. Cultural organizations, government agencies, museums, libraries, and the American public are encouraged to join in celebrating National Arts and Humanities Month using #NAHM2024 and #NAHM.
