Tropical Storm Debby Update # 3 - City of St. Petersburg Closures & Safety Tips

Aug. 4, 2024 - As inclement weather impacts St. Petersburg, it's important for residents to stay informed about facility closures and safety guidelines. This update covers the temporary closure of City amenities and offers essential storm safety tips for drivers and residents.

City Facility Closures

Due to the inclement weather, City golf courses, (Mangrove Bay, Cypress Links, and Twin Brooks), pools, brush sites, and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve are now closed for the day. Sunken Gardens remains closed as well.

Storm Safety Tips

Residents are encouraged to take caution if driving. Here are some tips for drivers:

  • Expect some minor street flooding in low-lying areas.

  • Turn your headlights on and keep your flashers off, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and give yourself extra time to reach your destination.

  • Avoid driving through flooded streets, as you may push water into neighbors properties and / or risk your vehicle getting stuck.

Information about power outages:

Drivers of electric vehicles should take these precautions:

  • Never drive through flood water.

  • Maintain your battery at 100% state of charge. Do not leave your EV plugged into a charger.

  • Park out of flood-prone areas and at least 50 ft away from any structure or other vehicles.

  • Never attempt to drive or charge a vehicle that has been submerged in floodwaters.

  • Properly dispose of any lithium-ion batteries or devices containing lithium-ion batteries exposed to floodwaters. Do not discard these batteries in regular trash.

If your property has been flooded, take these precautions:

  • Turn off the main power to your home and unplug all electrical devices if flood water is approaching.

  • Do not touch wet electrical equipment.

  • After the storm is over, seek professional assistance. Stay up to date and visit www.stpete.org/flooding.

Generator safety information:

  • Keep generators, and its power source, covered and safe in wet conditions.

  • Never use a generator indoors or in an attached garage, as carbon monoxide from the exhaust can be deadly.

  • Never store fuel indoors or refuel a running generator. Always have a fire extinguisher nearby when using a generator.
