On the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness month, I received a text from a friend of more than 20 years that simply said, "my wife has breast cancer". It was harsh and startling, and I can't stop thinking about it as I reflect on my personal journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer myself one year ago this month.

Unfortunately, this is a common story. Throughout the year, I met many strong women with similar stories and discovered that many women I had known for years were survivors as well. Today, I am thankful to share that I have successfully completed treatment. My experience has deepened my appreciation for the importance of early detection, the power of community support and the critical role physical therapy has in recovery.

Every woman's journey is different, but some of the experiences are shared; the fear, worry over how to deliver the news to our children and extended family, and even managing day-to-day life during recovery from surgery and chemotherapy.

I will hold my friends' hand often through the next year, and as I write this, I remember all the ways people best supported me. I hope some of these comments are helpful as so many of us have friends and family affected.

The Importance of Screenings and Preventative Treatments

I owe a debt of gratitude to the City of Chandler's Wellness program. Their relentless emails, fliers and messaging spurred me to schedule routine exam last October. That exam led to the many appointments that confirmed I did have breast cancer, a moment that changed my life.

You've heard this before, but I cannot stress enough the importance of breast cancer screenings for early detection, a key factor in successful treatment which significantly increases survival rates. I encourage everyone to schedule regular screenings, even if there are no symptoms or family history.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect reminder to take that step.

Supporting Those Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Knowing how to offer support can feel challenging. In my experience, the most meaningful support came from people who reached out often, but also reassured me that there was no pressure to respond. During the times I didn't know how I would feel from one hour to the next, it was comforting to know that people understood I simply wasn't up to returning a phone call and kept reaching out anyway.

I also recommend taking a delicate balance when sharing your own stories when someone is in the middle of treatment. Words of encouragement and strength are always welcome. Keeping a positive attitude through daily sickness, hair loss and fatigue could be tough. But hearing people's most devastating experiences made it nearly impossible. Now that I'm feeling healthy, I'm more than happy to lend a sympathetic ear.

The Role of Physical Therapy in Recovery

Post-treatment recovery is often a challenging phase. Many survivors, including myself, face issues such as pain, numbness and restricted mobility in the arms and shoulders, especially after surgery. Physical therapy has been instrumental in my recovery, helping to restore my strength, mobility and flexibility. Specific exercises designed for breast cancer recovery can significantly reduce discomfort and improve your quality of life. For anyone who has undergone surgery or radiation, I highly recommend discussing the benefits of physical therapy with your healthcare provider. It's been lifechanging for me.

Community Support and Continuing Public Service

During my treatment, I was deeply moved by the support from the Chandler community. The cards, messages and heartfelt gestures from so many of you reminded me just how strong our community is. I offer my deepest gratitude to everyone who offered their support. It truly made a difference.

While undergoing treatment, I remained committed to fulfilling my duties as a councilmember and I never missed a meeting. Serving Chandler is my passion, and I am grateful to have continued working alongside my fellow councilmembers. There were days when treatment was physically and emotionally draining, but I worked remotely when needed and balanced my health with Council obligations because I believed, and still believe, that public service doesn't stop for personal challenges. I want to thank my fellow Councilmembers and city staff for their part in helping me fulfill my obligations.

I offer my deepest sympathies and support to any person or family member who is in the midst of breast cancer treatment. As a survivor, I stand with those currently facing this diagnosis and will continue to advocate for awareness and support within our community.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of patients and families facing this diagnosis and treatment.
