European Council’s Strategic Agenda neglects environmental concerns

(Brussels, 28 June 2024) Yesterday, the Heads of State and Government in the European Council adopted their Strategic Agenda 2024-2029, setting the direction for the EU's policies over the next five years.

IFAW is disappointed with the agenda, noting that it barely mentions environmental issues, with only one sentence: "We will continue to protect nature and reverse the degradation of ecosystems, including oceans," addressing environmental protection.

Ilaria Di Silvestre, Head of EU Policy and Campaigns at IFAW, criticized the agenda for not adequately addressing environmental challenges. The agenda focused instead on promoting a strong and competitive Europe without a comprehensive plan for environmental protection. "This is a critical shortcoming when our planet is facing unprecedented environmental challenges," said Di Silvestre.

IFAW is urging EU institutions to adopt a proactive environmental strategy. This includes fully implementing the Marine Strategy Framework Directive to sustain marine resources, reduce noise pollution, and protect habitats. The implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the Nature Restoration Law are vital to stopping biodiversity loss and restoring ecosystems.

IFAW stresses the importance of enforcing the EU Action Plan against Wildlife Trafficking more strictly, with better cooperation across borders, stricter laws, and increased public awareness. They also encourage the EU to support global environmental agreements and contribute to international climate mitigation, disaster preparedness, and wildlife conservation efforts.

"The European Council's new Strategic Agenda doesn't show the necessary commitment of the EU to address the environmental crises we face," concluded Di Silvestre. "We urge EU leaders to prioritise environmental protection and take decisive actions for the benefit of animals, people, and the planet."
