Animal Care and Control Critically Over Capacity

Contact: Arielle Weinberger • (561) 233-1222 • [email protected]

Palm Beach County Public Safety Department Animal Care and Control Division (PBCACC) is beyond its capacity for care and is looking to the community for help and spreading awareness.

Currently, incoming pets are greatly outnumbering the amount of pets being adopted, rescued or fostered. As an example, last month, on a daily average, the shelter released 18 pets to new homes or rescues while 30 pets arrived at the shelter. This is far beyond the capacity for the quality of care PBCACC aims to provide for the homeless pets of Palm Beach County.

Shelter overcrowding increases the risk of illness and behavioral issues in pets while both staff and animals both become overwhelmed. PBCACC is doing everything in its power to provide positive outcomes to the pets in its care. In 2023, PBCACC achieved a "Nearly No-Kill" status with a live release rate of over 85% and aims to increase that percentage.

To help move more pets into good homes quickly, PBCACC offers the following:

  • Stray Hold Partner Program is open to all local rescue partners.
  • Home-Based Stray Hold Program where members of the public may care for a stray hold pet for a 10 day period before finalizing an adoption if no owner comes forward. Pets staying at a stray hold partner will still be able to be found on the shelter's SNAP Lost and Found page: SNAP (palm-beach.fl.us)

Thinking of surrendering your pet? Currently PBCACC has a two-month waiting period. Owner surrenders are by appointment only and PBCACC will only accept animals from Palm Beach County. Remember, a pet will be happier and healthier in a home rather than in the shelter, even if they are in a crate during work hours. Bringing a pet to resources such as adoptapet.com and home-home.org are great for trying to rehome a pet to a good home. Bringing a pet to PBCACC to surrender should be a last resort when all else fails.

Looking to adopt? Stop by the shelter to see all of the amazing pets available for adoption! Can't provide a forever home to a pet? Let a shelter pet crash on the couch for as little as seven days by signing up to be a foster! Can't bring a pet home but still want to help? Volunteer, donate, and educate!

PBCACC is dedicated to promoting the health, safety, and welfare of both people and animals the community. For more information on PBCACC's services, please visit the website or call 561-233-1200.
