The University of Toledo has again been identified as one of the best colleges in the country by U.S. News and World Report.

UToledo is ranked 296 out of 434 participating universities in the 2025 Best Colleges rankings.

"UToledo offers a world-class education and a portfolio of degree programs in high-demand fields that is second to none," UToledo Interim President Matt Schroeder said. "Rankings like the U.S. News Best Colleges are another way for more people to be introduced to UToledo and learn about what we have to offer. We have a great story to tell."

U.S. News and World Report bases its rankings on a number of metrics, including graduation and retention rates, peer assessment, faculty resources and research, social mobility, per-student spending, graduate earnings and debt, and standardized test scores.

UToledo received positive marks in the rankings for improvements in its average six-year graduation rate, which has now improved in six straight years, average first-year retention rate and the scholarly work of its faculty. UToledo also saw a decrease in the average amount of federal loan debt held by students at graduation.

New for the 2025 rankings, U.S. News and World Report changed the methodology on standardized tests scores to only consider them as part of an institution's ranking if more than half of incoming freshmen submit test scores.

At UToledo, which has not required applicants to submit standardized test scores since 2020, only 28% of freshmen include ACT scores and only 10% include SAT scores with their application.

The change in methodology was the primary contributing factor for the change in UToledo's ranking compared to last year.

"A standardized test should not be a barrier to entry and we will continue our test optional practice," Schroeder said. "We are proud of the access we provide students to receive an excellent UToledo education that sets them up for unparalleled success after graduation."

While not reflected in the time period for the ranking, UToledo announced earlier this month that it has achieved its highest graduation rate on record with 57.9% of students who first enrolled at UToledo in 2018 graduating in six years. First-to-second year retention also climbed to 77.3%, the highest rate in four years.

The University also was again recognized as a Top Public School by U.S. News, ranking 161 out of 225 participating public universities.

Several individual undergraduate academic programs were nationally ranked as well, led by business, which jumped 28 spots over the 2024 ranking. Computer science, engineering, psychology and nursing also were nationally ranked.
