Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs hosted a side event on the topic "Beyond the Adoption : Practical Ways towards the Implementation of the Agreement under BBNJ Agreement,"

On 11 September 2024, Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs hosted a side event on the topic "Beyond the Adoption : Practical Ways towards the Implementation of the Agreement under BBNJ Agreement," during the 62nd Annual Session of Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) in Bangkok.

This event aims to facilitate an exchange of views and experiences on how legal experts, policymakers and stakeholders can work together towards the ratification and the implementation of the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement). The panel consisted of experts who are intensively keen on these topics, including Mr. Bingzhuo Li, Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) of the United Nations; Dr. Naporn Popattanachai, Lecturer in Environmental Law and Marine Law at the School of Law, University of Galway, Ireland; Ms. Nancy Soi, Programme Management Officer from the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), and Mr. Mahesh Pradhan, COBSEA Coordinator.

The BBNJ Agreement has been signed by 92 States and ratified by 8 of them. Thailand is also undertaking necessary steps toward signing and becoming a Party of the Agreement.
