Sumter County's annual fire hydrant flushing program began yesterday in Center Hill and will continue across other areas in the county. This program ensures hydrants are operational and in good working order, helping to identify potential issues, such as low water pressure or obstructed valves, so maintenance and repairs can be completed promptly.
This information benefits both fire departments and the public by providing up-to-date hydrant locations and water flow data.
Municipalities also use this data to simulate high-flow conditions, which help assess the pressure and flow capabilities of the water distribution system and assist in calibrating hydraulic models. Additionally, this information supports the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in evaluating water systems for the Public Protection Classification (PPC) program. Through the PPC program, ISO collects and analyzes water system data from communities nationwide, which influences fire preparedness budgets, system maintenance, and insurance ratings.
After Center Hill, inspections will proceed to Webster, Bushnell, Coleman, Lake Panasoffkee, and Wildwood. The timeline may vary depending on weather, hydrant issues, and the number of
hydrants tested each day.
There will be no interruption in water service from this process.
