Master of Arts (Writing)
UNE Student Council Postgraduate Representative

What are you studying?

I am studying a Master of Arts (Writing) through the University of New England, and I'm currently about halfway through my course. My study is completely online, which has been a great way to balance my academic pursuits with family commitments and work.

What is the UNE Student Council, and what does your role entail?

The UNE Student Council represents the student body, advocating for their needs, concerns, and interests to improve the university experience. As a postgraduate student representative, I provide a voice for postgrad students, ensuring their feedback and unique challenges are heard. My role involves participating in council meetings, contributing to decision-making processes, and working on initiatives that promote equity and inclusivity.

Would you recommend students be involved with the UNE Council? If so, why?

Absolutely. Being part of the Student Council is a great opportunity to make meaningful changes, meet diverse people, and develop leadership skills. It's also a great way to give back to the UNE community and help shape a more supportive and dynamic environment for students.

What is your background, and what brought you to study at UNE?

I have a Bachelor of Liberal Studies Arts degree in English Literature and a Master of Teaching (Secondary). I chose UNE because of its strong reputation for online learning, which allowed me to continue my studies while balancing family life and work.

What would you like to do after your studies?

After completing my Master of Writing, I'd love to pursue a PhD to further develop my expertise in creative writing and literature. Alongside my studies, I aim to teach part-time, sharing my love of writing and storytelling while continuing my academic and creative pursuits.

What have been your biggest achievements and challenges in your study journey so far? Who/what has helped you along the way?

My biggest achievement has been balancing full-time study with raising a teenager and two toddlers, working as a teacher, and contributing to university life. The biggest challenge has been managing time effectively, especially during moments of overwhelm.

What has been your favourite unit so far?

My favourite units so far have been WRIT509 - Writing Creative Non-Fiction and WRIT503 - Writing for Research, as they allowed me to experiment with different genres and styles, and discover a love of research.

What have you learnt about yourself through university?

I've learnt that I'm more resilient and capable than I once thought. University has shown me how to balance multiple roles, adapt to challenges, and embrace opportunities for growth, even when things feel daunting.

Do you study around hobbies and other commitments?

I balance my studies alongside raising a teenager and two toddlers, working as a teacher, and pursuing personal interests. These include writing, felt needling, knitting, reading, and enjoying musical theatre.

Is there any advice you might give to other uni students or advice you would give to your younger self?

To other uni students: Don't be afraid to ask for help-whether it's from lecturers, classmates, support services, counsellors, student council reps and family. If you are struggling with something there is always someone who can help.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I'd like to encourage students to embrace every opportunity at UNE, whether it's joining a club, contributing to Student Council, or connecting with peers! Even online students - you can start a club and do online events, join the Student Council or become a member of a committee.
