B 3 Anti Crime Unit Recovered Approximately $3,495 in Stolen Merchandise

At about 2:55 PM, on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, officers assigned to the Anti-Crime Unit of District B-3 (Mattapan) arrested Jamonte Smith, 24, of Dorchester, for receiving stolen property.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Washington Street and Eldon Street when they observed a motor vehicle operating at a speed greater than reasonable. Officers attempted to follow the vehicle, which continued to accelerate and make multiple abrupt turns.

The vehicle was blocked in by a construction crew doing road work, and a trash truck which made the road impassable. Officers positioned their cruiser behind the motor vehicle in the area of 2 Mount Bowdoin Green. Officers activated their cruiser's emergency lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop, and observed the operator place an unknown item in the back seat.

Officers made contact with the occupants of the vehicle and observed a large amount of clothing in the backseat. After further investigation, officers requested the occupants to exit the vehicle. Officers conducted a pat frisk of the vehicle, and observed multiple security tags affixed to the clothing in the back seat. Officers also observed a powerful magnet and a handheld detacher that are used to disengage the clothing security tags.

The officers placed the operator into handcuffs, and began to conduct a motor vehicle inventory search. Officers were able to recover additional stolen merchandise from the trunk of the vehicle. A total of 65 stolen items were recovered and the total cost was approximately $3494.51.

Smith was placed under arrest and charged with Receiving Stolen Property over $1,200, and Two Counts of Possession of Theft Detection Shielding Device. He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
