Dr. Artie Travis, Frostburg State University's vice president for Student Affairs, was the 2024 recipient of the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. Travis, along with fellow award winners, was honored at the Chamber's Recognition Reception on Nov. 7.

"I am deeply honored and grateful to receive this community service award from the Allegany County Chamber of Commerce," said Travis. "Serving Allegany County has given me the privilege of working on several meaningful projects, and I've had the chance to contribute to initiatives that honor our shared heritage and build a stronger, more inclusive future."

The Chamber's recognition awards are given to members are role models for others, whether it be business professionals or community leaders, who hold the bar higher for themselves and their organizations and who make exemplary contributions to their community.

Travis was part of a group who worked to place the first African American historic marker in Garrett County at Negro Mountain, was a member of the Western Maryland Advisory Council of the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights and was appointed as a trustee on the Allegany County Library Board.

"I am not alone in this journey. The work we do would not be possible without the tireless efforts of the entire team at Frostburg State University and the partnerships we have built within this community." Travis continued, "Together, we are creating spaces where every person can feel seen, heard and supported - because community service is not just an individual act; it is a collective mission."

Mr. Robert Cooper, FSU's assistant vice president for Student Engagement, nominated Travis for this award and had the privilege of introducing him at the reception. In addition to Cooper, Travis also heard kind remarks from "special guest", Lavada Bittinger, daughter of FSU's associate vice president for Academic Operations and Fiscal Affairs, who said it was her honor to introduce her friend for his involvement in serving the community. "Dr. Travis regularly goes up and beyond to raise people up with Bobcat Pride," said the younger Bittinger.

Travis closed by saying "As I accept this award, I reaffirm my commitment to this community and to a legacy of service that I hope will inspire future generations. I am proud to be part of this community, and I look forward to all the ways we will continue to serve together."
