Mitsubishi Electric Power Products will expand in Pittsburgh region; PA invests $6.7+ million in support

This final week of October starts with more exciting business investment news for the Pittsburgh region.

Today, the Shapiro administration announced that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will invest in excess of $6.7 million to support the expansion of Mitsubishi Electric Power Products (MEPPI) in southwestern Pennsylvania.

The expansion will see construction of a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and testing lab - a project in which MEPPI will invest at least $86 million, create at least 200 new jobs and retain 800+ jobs. Advanced switchgear will be manufactured at the site - increasing power reliability and decreasing carbonization via a modernized electric grid.

This is significant because it contributes to advancing critical energy transition - a priority for our region and the globe. Pittsburgh, a hub of energy innovation, will play an important role in the transition because of MEPPI's decision to grow here. The win also marks the expansion of a business with deep roots locally. "Growing our own" is key to the regional economic development strategy because expansions of existing businesses - for the past 17 years - have proven to account for 86% of business investment activity - including CAPEX and job creation and retention - across our 10 counties.

Below is the Conference's statement in reaction to this good news.

"The Pittsburgh region has been a hub of advanced manufacturing and energy innovation for centuries. We commend MEPPI on their decision to expand here through their commitment to solving complex challenges with sustainable energy solutions," said Allegheny Conference on Community Development CEO Stefani Pashman. "It was our privilege to work side-by-side with MEPPI leadership to integrate the efforts of dozens of state and county partners to make this expansion a reality. While there is much to be done to construct the new facility, the road to completion is paved and we stand at the ready to continue partnering with MEPPI and other businesses who have committed to growing and developing our region."
