Advanced Nuclear: Key to the Energy Transition

Nuclear energy has supplied about a fifth of America's power each year since 1990, according to the NEI. It's the nation's largest source of clean energy-making up nearly 60% of our emissions-free electricity. That's more than all renewables combined. The nation's fleet of reactors also operates more than 92% of the time, making it the most reliable energy source on the grid.

Clean and safe: Nuclear plants have a long track record of safe operation. In the history of U.S. commercial nuclear energy, there have been no radiation-related health effects linked to their operation. Nuclear power plants maintain the highest standard for operational safety, security, cybersecurity and emergency preparedness.

In addition to being safe and regulated, nuclear energy is a critical resource to ensure reliable electricity in a carbon-free future. It is carbon-free energy, reliable and cost-effective. As Dairyland President & CEO Brent Ridgesays, if we are in favor of reducing carbon, we need to be in favor of nuclear energy because it both supports the integration of renewable resources and ensures 24/7 power supply. As Dairyland continues on our path to a low-carbon future, we are exploring advanced nuclear technologies (such as small modular reactors, or SMRs) to support diversification.
