Healthy Aging Fair Shows Older New Yorkers Why New York City Is A Great Location To Age-In-Place

Over 500 Residents Took Part in Demonstrations Designed to Promote Active Lifestyles

The Fair Took Place During National Falls Prevention Awareness Week and Organizations
Educated Attendees on How to Prevent Dangerous Falls

New York, NY -The Department for the Aging joined by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, NYC Health + Hospitals and a host of other public and private sector organizations today held a comprehensive Healthy Aging Fair for older New Yorkers at Asphalt Green, on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

Over 500 residents from across the city attended to participate in a day filled with free screenings, activities, and demonstrations designed to promote healthy and active lifestyles, and help them confidently age in place. More than sixty exhibitors offered classes including cooking, dance and yoga, as well as the opportunity to ask health professionals medical and prescription drug advice, and free blood pressure, hearing, and dental screenings.

The event took place during national Falls Prevention Awareness Week, designed to educate older adults about the dangers of falling and how to prevent related injuries. Participating organizations distributed educational materials and resources on how to prevent falls at home, during activities, and while running errands, to support their well-being and continue living independently.

"Older adults are the foundation of so many families and communities across the city" said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Isom. "Today's Healthy Aging Fair showcased the vibrancy of this community as well as resources and supports for older adults, caregivers, and family members.
