On October 16, 2024, at approximately 4:09 p.m., troopers from SP Painted Post responded to a collision involving a school bus on State Route 417 in the town of Erwin. '

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2018 Dodge, operated by Leanna A. Byler, age 40, of Addison, NY, was traveling east on State Route 417 when it failed to stop for a 2018 Addison Central School Bus, operated by Gregory P. Creely, age 62, of Cameron Mills, NY, in the westbound lane. The 2018 Dodge subsequently struck the rear of a 2015 Toyota, operated by Joseph M. Powers, age 28, of Cameron Mills, NY, that was stopped in the eastbound lane for the school bus. The 2015 Toyota subsequently struck the side of the school bus.

Creely and all six juvenile passengers were not injured. A 5-year-old passenger in the 2015 Toyota was transported via LifeNet to Strong Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition.

Byler was also not injured. She was issued three traffic infractions returnable to the Erwin Town Court.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, Gang Mills Fire Department, American Medical Response Ambulance, Tuscarora Ambulance, Addison Fire Department, Campbell Fire Department, and LifeNet of New York.

This is an ongoing investigation.
