Against the backdrop of the Chugach Mountains, the Alaska Airlines Center on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus is a testament to athletic achievement and cultural celebration. As this now iconic Anchorage landmark commemorates its 10th year, it's worth reflecting on its impact, how it has shaped the community and its role in inspiring countless athletes.
The Alaska Airlines Center has evolved into a hub on UAA's campus, hosting everything from championship athletics to world-class performances. Its 5,000-seat arena has become the epicenter of collegiate sports in Alaska, providing state-of-the-art facilities for basketball, volleyball and gymnastics programs.
"I had a couple of friends that got me interested in going to some games," said Tom Packer, longtime UAA donor and supporter. Under the guidance of former athletic director Steve Cobb, Packer's involvement deepened. "He's the one that inspired me to step up and do that," he said, reflecting on his journey from spectator to dedicated supporter. The Packer Family Pavilion was named in honor of the Packers' incredibly generous gift of $500,000 to the Building Futures Fund. The Packer family's commitment to UAA athletics exemplifies the center's broader impact.
"It's really exciting to see how many things happen in that arena other than just sports," Packer said. "But as far as we're concerned, sports comes first." His wife Vicki proudly added, "A lot of teams that come here from other states are always impressed with what a beautiful facility we have."
Long-time season ticket holder Judy Dresser captured the essence of the fan experience.
"The Alaska Airlines Center is a wonderful place to watch basketball games," Dresser said. Her words echo the sentiments of countless supporters who have witnessed memorable victories, including the legendary Great Alaska Shootout tournaments where the Seawolves faced off against Division 1 teams.
From NCAA tournaments to high school championships, the center has hosted events that have united our community and showcased Alaska's athletic talent. Each game, match and event has added to a rich tapestry of memories and achievements.
"As we celebrate ten incredible years, we take immense pride in celebrating the success of the Alaska Airlines Center with our community partner UAA," said Scott Habberstad, managing director for the Alaska market at Alaska Airlines. "It is inspiring to witness how the AAC has transformed into a gathering place that unites our community, empowers athletes and performers from across the state to chase their dreams and elevates our shared Alaskan spirit."
As the Alaska Airlines Center enters its second decade, it continues to serve as both a sporting venue and a cultural hub. The facility symbolizes UAA's commitment to excellence and its vital role in Alaska's athletic and cultural landscape.
The past decade has seen countless victories, emotional moments and community celebrations within these walls. As we look to the future, the Alaska Airlines Center remains poised to inspire new generations of athletes and create countless more memories for the Alaska community.
