One Motorist Charged And Convicted For Dangerous Driving

A 60-year-old male car driver was charged and convicted in court on 3 July 2024 for dangerous driving under Section 64(1) punishable under Section 64(2C)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961. He was fined $2,000 and disqualified from driving for 15 months. This is the first prosecution in court for a speeding violation captured by the speed enforcement function in a red light camera.

On 9 April 2024 at about 12.40pm, a red-light camera along West Coast Highway junction captured a car driven by the 60-year-old man running a red light and travelling at a speed of 111Km/h, in excess of the road speed limit of 70km/h.

The offence of dangerous driving carries a fine of up to $5,000, or an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, or both. Offenders may also be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles.

As of 1 April 2024, the speed enforcement function in red light cameras was progressively and dynamically activated at various locations. After the activation of this speed enforcement function, more than 5,000 speeding violations have been captured by these red light cameras.

The Police takes a serious view of motorists who engage in egregious driving behaviour, including speeding and running the red light. Such behaviour endangers the safety of all other road users. The Police will not hesitate to take firm action against motorists who choose to flout traffic laws and endanger the safety of other road users.
