City seeking community input on draft LGBTQ+ history research

The City of Sacramento is continuing development of the LGBTQ+ Historic Experience project, an initiative aimed at documenting and preserving the rich history of the LGBTQ+ community in Sacramento.

The second draft LGBTQ+ Historic Context Statement is now available for public review until Oct. 27. The City is asking for the public's help to review the second draft to ensure that an accurate narrative is being told and the important people and sites for the LGBTQ+ community are recognized.

Stories have been collected from one-on-one sessions, public meetings, online submissions, and small group sessions held in partnership with the Lavender Library, the LGBT Community Center, and Golden Rule Services.

"This project is a first of its kind for Sacramento and we are excited to be getting closer to a finished product, though we recognize there are always more stories to be told," said Associate Planner, Henry Feuss. "The community input is crucial to ensure the information is accurately depicting the lives and progression of the entire LGBTQ+ community in Sacramento."

Historic Context Statement

A historic context statement is a narrative summary of history for a particular community, topic, or type of architecture. In this case, it is a planning tool used to identify buildings, sites, and landscapes for their importance to the LGBTQ+ community in Sacramento.

The City's Historic Preservation office uses this document to support listing buildings on the Sacramento Register of Historic and Cultural Resources, create placemaking opportunities, and educate the public about this important history. This project was made possible by a grant funded by the California Office of Historic Preservation to help protect and preserve LGBTQ+ history in Sacramento.

Since the first draft was released and circulated, City staff, historic consultants, and volunteers have been hard at work doing more research in response to the dozens of comments that were received.
