Construction Contract for Wesley Seale Dam Upgrades Awarded

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - At today's regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council awarded a $25.5 million contract to Zachry Construction Corporation of San Antonio, Texas for the construction of the Wesley Seale Dewatering System & Spillway Gates Rehabilitation project.

The Wesley E. Seale Dam is located on the Nueces River in San Patricio and Jim Wells counties, approximately four miles southwest of Mathis, Texas, and 32 miles northwest of Corpus Christi, Texas. Lake Corpus Christi is a predominant water supply reservoir for the City of Corpus Christi. The Wesley Seale Dam was built in 1958. It has two separate spillways; 27 located on the south spillway and 33 located on the north spillway, respectively.

This project will facilitate the maintenance of the existing 60 crest gates and the construction of a robust dewatering system. This project was developed based on an inspection of the dam by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), which identified the need to create a rehabilitation program for the South and North spillway crest gates. Additionally, a dewatering system was recommended to allow gates and individual spillway maintenance. Dewatering removes ground or surface water from a precise location.

Construction is anticipated to begin this month, with completion projected in September 2027.
