Vision Zero Open House to Highlight Street Safety in Durham

Meet Durham's Vision Coordinator at a Public Open House

What: Safe Streets for Durham Public Open House and Safety Audit

Who: City of Durham Transportation Department, Smart Growth America, and CityHealth

When: Tuesday, Oct. 1, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.:Safe Streets for Durham Public Open House - This drop-in event is open to the public and interpretation will be available for Spanish speakers.

Where: Durham Armory, 212 Foster St.

Need to Know:

  • Safety Audit: Before the open house, Safety Auditors will include local and state officials as well as street safety advocates who will walk and/or bike to various locations to evaluate street safety conditions and concerns.
  • Safe Streets for Durham Public Open House: Participants will be encouraged to discuss their street safety concerns and learn more about the observations noted from the earlier Safety Audit in addition to other meetings that have taken place with stakeholders who implement safe streets strategies such as City staff, elected officials, commission members, the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization.
  • Information gathered from the safety audit and public open house will be used to help develop priorities and a collaborative plan for Durham's first-ever Vision Zero Action Plan. The plan should be finalized in December 2024, and proposed to the Durham City Council for adoption in early 2025.
  • In 2017, the City committed to Vision Zero to end traffic deaths and serious injuries. In 2024, the City re-established its commitment with a new resolution to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2035, and end traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2045.
