SentinelOne vs. CylanceENDPOINT Protection

SentinelOne vs. CylanceENDPOINT Protection

CYBERSECURITY / 11.08.24 / Paul Zimski

When it comes to safeguarding your enterprise from cyberthreats, choosing the right endpoint protection platform (EPP) is crucial. SentinelOne® Singularity™ and CylanceENDPOINT™ are two prominent players in the market but how do they compare? Let's break down the differences between these two cybersecurity solutions, focusing on efficacy, efficiency, and overall value, based on a 2024 Tolly Group report.

Independent Analysis of Endpoint Protection Platforms

The Tolly Group, a renowned independent testing lab, provides third-party validation services across the IT industry. Their 2024 analysis of SentinelOne versus CylanceENDPOINT gives us the most important insights for evaluating the performance of these EPPs.

Endpoint Protection Platform Efficacy

The primary goal of endpoint protection is to prevent and mitigate cyberattacks. How do SentinelOne Singularity and CylanceENDPOINT stack up in this regard?

Tolly Group's tests used 1,000 real-world malware samples in a Windows® 10 environment. They evaluated each product's ability to detect and block threats, both with and without an internet/cloud connection.

EPP Efficacy When Connected to the Cloud

Here is how effective each EPP was at blocking threats, when connected to the cloud.

  • CylanceENDPOINT: 100% effective (all threats detected)
  • SentinelOne: 88% effective (120 of 1,000 threats remained undetected)

(Source: Tolly Group evaluation, 2024).

EPP Efficacy When Disconnected From the Cloud

Another important test metric looked at the effectiveness of the competing EPPs when they are disconnected from the internet. This applies to endpoints, for example, when there is a cloud outage, when they operate in extremely remote parts of the earth or when they are air gapped. Here are the test results:

  • CylanceENDPOINT: 100% effective (no change when running in isolation)
  • SentinelOne: 76% effective (240 of 1,000 threats remain undetected)

If this many threats go un-detected in a limited test, what does this look like at scale for your organization? How much will a lack of detection increase your risk of a successful attack, remediation costs, operational disruptions and reputational damage?

Going back to the evaluation, the Tolly Group concluded that CylanceENDPOINT, "Delivered superior threat protection both offline and online to ensure safety from malicious files, regardless of internet connectivity status."

If your organization is looking for a solution that blocks the highest level of threats effectively and consistently, regardless of connectivity, CylanceENDPOINT is the clear winner. But what about efficiency?

System Resources Used by Endpoint Protection Platforms

CylanceENDPOINT is the most effective EPP when it comes to blocking threats according to the report, but how many system resources does CylanceENDPOINT use compared to SentinelOne Singularity? This is an important question because heavy resource usage reduces productivity and impacts overall business operations. Tolly Group compared CPU usage for SentinelOne and CylanceENDPOINT while scanning malware samples.

  • CylanceENDPOINT Resource Use: Utilized just 16% of CPU on average until all malware samples were examined.
  • SentinelOne Resource Use: Utilized 70% of CPU on average until all malware samples were examined.

(Source: Tolly Group evaluation, 2024).

SentinelOne consumed far greater CPU resources than CylanceENDPOINT. The Cylance® solution leaves far more computer resources available for business tasks.

Conclusion

The Tolly Group's findings underscore the strengths of CylanceENDPOINT in providing greater protection efficacy with far fewer resource demands than SentinelOne Singularity.
