GBI Investigates Death of Thomson Man

UPDATE - September 23, 2024:

The GBI and McDuffie County Sheriff's Office have arrested Antavious Griffin, age 20, of Thomson, GA, Tyreon Mew, Jatavious Griffin, age 18, of Thomson, GA, and Tony Griffin, age 19, of Thomson, GA in connection to the shooting death of Calvin Hart, Jr. on Friday, September 13, 2024.

On September 17, 2024, Antavious Griffin was charged with Aggravated Assault, Felony Murder, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. Antavious Griffin was taken into custody after a car chase in McDuffie County, Georgia. The Thomson Police Department and the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office have taken additional charges on Antavious Griffin stemming from the car chase.

Mew was a passenger in the car. Mew was arrested and charged by the Thomson Police Department and McDuffie County Sheriff's Office.

In addition, Jatavious Griffin and Tony Griffin were charged with Unlawful Possession of Firearms or Weapons and Participation in Criminal Street Gang Activity.

All four men are being held at the McDuffie County Jail.

Thomson, GA (September 17, 2024) - At the request of the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office, GBI agents are investigating the death of Calvin Hart Jr., age 39, of Thomson, GA.

On Friday, September 13, 2024, at about 5:15 a.m., the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office was dispatched and responded to a home in the 1200 block of Royal Street, Thomson, McDuffie County, GA, in reference to a shooting. Hart was discovered inside the home with gunshot wounds and pronounced dead on the scene.

A GBI Medial Examiner will perform an autopsy at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, Georgia.

Currently, no arrests have been made.
