Sgt. Steve Owen Memorial Park Hardcourt Renovations Complete

Lancaster, CA. January 24, 2024- The City of Lancaster celebrated the long-awaited reopening of the tennis and pickleball courts at Sgt. Steve Owen Memorial Park following the completion of recent renovations. These renovated hardcourts will see improvements around the entire area. The courts opened to the public on January 5, 2024, and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on January 17, 2024 to mark the momentous occasion.

"The reopening of these courts is a celebration of movement, a testament to our belief that active living is the foundation of health and happiness. As a big fan of playing pickleball, I see this as more than a sport; it's a way to bring our community together, encouraging everyone to move, interact, and just enjoy the game," said Mayor R. Rex Parris. "The City of Lancaster is proud to offer these top-notch hardcourt upgrades, inviting all to experience the camaraderie and wellness that come with every game played here."

The hardcourt renovation project was born out of the community's requests for updated tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts. The City gained valuable input from the community in a variety of meetings held in the spring and summer of 2023. There was an overwhelming demand for more pickleball courts.

The renovations entailed more than the resurfacing and repainting of the courts. The project included the introduction of new landscaping, court LED lighting, a new windscreen, additional concrete, two chilled water fountains, signage, benches, and trash cans. The City's PARCS Department will also be working closely with the community to maintain the renovation and keep the facility in top condition.

The project will occur in two phases. Last week's ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated the completion of Phase I. Phase II upgrades will include a new tennis court, renovated basketball courts, benches, and additional drinking fountains and trash cans. The anticipated investment for the project by its completion will be approximately $890,000.
